What If We Just… Moved to Cumbria?

So… I want to move. Again.

I think my husband secretly dreads me getting this feeling every few years and for some reason, it always comes after we have just spent a huge chunk of money on upgrading a part of the house we currently live in. Oops.

In our previous house we paid to have the entire back garden renovated and then immediately moved. In this house we have renovated the entire front garden, installed air-con throughout the house, got a swimming pool set up going and I have cottage garden full of rose bushes that I am lovingly trying to grow. So naturally, I want to move!

Living the Dream

But where would we even move too? I already live pretty far away from where I grew up and a hefty drive away from my parents, so we don’t really have that many roots tying us down. Add in homeschooling and my husband mostly working remotely and that opens up just about anywhere in the country. Maybe even out of the country?

My maternal family comes from Spiddal in Co. Galway and I have always had the dream of relocating my family back there and living my best coastal life. I’ve even been learning Irish, as Spiddal is an Irish speaking community. But honestly, there’s just too many things stopping us from doing that right now. It would cause tax complications with my husband’s UK job, losing things like the NHS (as bad as it may be) and being a whole sea away from family is a step too far for us at this point in our lives.

So that rules out my Irish farm life — for now. But at least I know a new language!

So Where?

We have considered Wales, Penhriwceiber is also a genetic tie for me. We have considered going down the country to the southern shores. We have considered going up, to the greens of Scotland. But after our holiday a few years ago, we have decided to focus our searching on Cumbria.

We visited Grange-over-Sands for our family break and loved the area. The scenery, the slow-paced vibe, the coast. It all adds up to the life we are looking to lead. The houses prices are also low enough compared to our current area that we can upgrade in a pretty meaningful way to have the extra space and land we are looking for.

It isn’t such a big culture shock that we will feel out of place but it is far enough away from south-east living where a large town is on your doorstep that it will feel peaceful.

I already homeschool, make my own bread and grow our own food. Ultimately any cottage is still my dream life, whichever island it is on.

Maybe I will even get a chicken or two?!
